Hi all!

I was watching this video and the owner of the Kia Forte Koup said there is a knock detection sensor so he runs high octane.
I'm taking him at his word for now as I cant verify at the moment. (Do these cars have knock detection? Source?)

Do you guys use high octane gas?

Here in Texas we have 93 and I have used it a time or too.
Not sure if its placebo or not but it feels peppier.

Has anyone dynoed your car on higher octane gas?
If so, is there a benefit in performance or am I just getting my hopes up?

I use nothing but Costco 93 octane gas. It's rated as Top Tier gas and my car runs great on it. It's been said here by members that have more knowledge about this then me that the ECU pulls a lot of timing thus reducing performance w 87 octane gas.

OEM says 87.
For months I have used 87 with OK results, although it would sometimes vary depending on the source.

Let me put it this way. Depending what kind of driver/guy you are, you may like one answer over the other.

The engine is designed to work on 87. It is pushed to use every bit if this petrol grade. It is also made such way it is safe to use 87 and in a situation when there is a knock, it will alter the timing so that the knock is prevented. So keep using 87.

Or, if you feel the power increase, butt dyno, is worth the expense - go for it and pour 93. ECU will push a tad further, but do not expect miracles. Also, keep in mind that more power means more fuel used. The only thing gained with higher octane is more power under lower rpm, that is more boost. Again, a tad.

I used both, as I said.
I also experienced knock in 93 octane... so no worries. It may happen under certain situations, such as high load under low rpm on very hot day with hot engine.

I would say - experiment. See how fuel economy is affected and make your own decision.

However, if you are going into 93 and will think what else can be done - spark plugs (HKS), KN drop in filter. Those are two easy "hidden" mods that will allow for a bit more power.

I used 87 since "new" and the car ran good. Now has 26K.
But now I have switched to 89 and I do think the car runs better.
So I'll stay with 89 for now and will see, summer is coming so more heat is on its way.

91 - which is the highest I can get around me.

I have used 87 before but I dont know if its just me but I find this car runs like crap when its cold (and temps are cold) but slightly better on 91.

I vary what octane I use. If the weather is going to be crummy and I expect to be mostly just commuting I'll use 87.
If I expect to have a chance to do some spririted driving I'll fill up with 93.
If we are expecting very hot weather I'll also fill up with at least 89.

I feel like I read somewhere that our octane mappings are basically 87 or 89+. I can't recall the source for that but I do feel like I notice the difference between 87 and 89 more than between 89 and 93. Of course thats just speculation but there does seem to be a difference when increase octane.
