That one friend who thinks it's stupid to mod a new car

So I have a friend who knocks me every time I talk about modding my car for performance. He's always saying I am voiding my warranty, and how his son used to work at Kia as a mechanic, and that even changing the exhaust by doing the muffler delete will void my warranty. Says I'm stupid for buying a brand new car, and modding it and upgrading parts.

So now I am stuck trying to decide if it is worth doing anything else to my car. Obviously I don't want my warranty claim to be rejected it something happens, but I'm not really changing anything but removing restrictions and letting the car breathe better, and cool better, so I don't know why they would void a warranty for that kind of stuff. My plans were FMIC, and trans cooler, and maybe the 2nd cat gut/delete, and the wastegate hack.

Warranties are made to be broken! The only way a warranty claim can be denied is if it is determined that the modded part was the cause of the failure. But regardless do what you want with your car and don't listen to people around you. At the end of the day it is your car and your decision! I say mod the shit out of it lol but that is just me.

If you wait until the warranty is up, that's 10 YEARS or 100K miles?!? My Forte5 will be all worn out by then!

This.

Google "Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act" - In a nutshell it lays out exactly what Mikeysweettricks said.

Example: If your terribly un-informed friend deleted the muffler from his car and the suspension went bad, he still gets his suspension fixed under warranty.

I had to use that act in an argument with subaru a few years back. Tried blaming my exhaust, short shifter and steering rack bushings for a grind in 1st gear (bad synchro). luckily i had reported the problem before any of that was installed, but did need to take it up to the VP.

If you understand how the systems work then mod away. All i think is fair is don't try to have them fix something you messed up. But don't let them trick you into paying for something that should be fixed under warranty.

They can't deny you for a muffler delete. He is a moron. All they would say is then won't cover the exhaust system. My dealer could care less about a exhaust. They told me to just not open the motor and if something major goes on just put it all to stock. My service guys know what's on my car and love it. I even let the manager take it out to get lunch. He called and asked of course. He wanted to see how it was when modded.

If your not doing much you will be fine. Just keep the stock parts like I do just in case

That's because all KIA knows of Australia and New Zealand is Mad Max! They aren't going to pay for any Beyond Thunderdome crap you guys are going to try! :D

Nice :) (Although us kiwis can't take any credit for Mad Max.) For anyone who hasn't seen the latest Mad Max film (with Tom Hardy as Mad Max), it must be seen, and on the big screen if possible - it is the most insane, but mind-blowingly entertaining, piece of cinema in ages :).
