Oil Catch Can

Hi: I've been reading a lot lately about oil catch cans and I've seen a few different ideas thrown around. It seems that the ultimate setup is to have two cans - one on the PCV line to the intake manifold as well as one on the valve cover vent to the intake tubing pre turbo.
Lately I've read a couple of posts (with much discussion) that said if you are just going to have one can it's better to have it on the valve cover vent instead of the PCV line. The idea was that oil, gunk and unburned gas causes more damage to the turbo (coking?) and gums up the intercooler.
Any comments?
I've also just ordered the ADD W1 Ver.1 Baffled catch can- has anyone had any experience with it?

plenty of experience with the ADD W1 can. It is the can that I use in my catch can kits, specifically for the VTurbo.

I plan on doing a kit specifically for the FTurbo once I can get my hands on one.

My kits include custom fit lines, line coupler, custom bracket, catch can and SS mesh packing.

No real need for two cans though if you don't want. Especially two nice cans. I would use the ADD W1 baffled can on the PCV and if you aren't keen on atmospherically venting the breather, run a cheap DIY can on that. There isn't all that much that comes through the breather. I vent my breather with a long line and breather filter.
I recently just fabbed a dual catch can with my buddy at voodoo fabrication. Though ill probably change a few things on my next one, it didn't come out bad at all for a prototype. And It didn't cost 400+ dollars, which is the best part. It still needs to get powder coated at my shop, and I want to switch to AN fittings, but im happy with it for now and it performs well. How do you drain it?
Thanks! And for now, i just take it off and turn it upside down. The return doesnt have a down tube on it so all the fluid comes out the one fitting. The next one will have some sort of fitting on the bottom to drain with, and i plan on re directing the right side ports to angle further back to keep the hoses off the engine cover.

if you want to vent to atmosphere you could add a port and run a hose to the bottom.
i'm thinking about getting some 3/8 hoses i think it is and just running both to the ground but i need to read up on it more before i act.
veloster turbo's share the same engine as ours so if you need info or more resources its good to take a gander there.

We've actually noticed a trend in the need/desire for dual OCC's and will be releasing our affordable dual OCC system this week!
I have a one way valve installed on my pcv side and im running a filter/ venting to atmosphere under my engine cover on the breather side.
I like the custom fab cans.... here is the store bought 400 dollar option on my car

I run a single W1 ADD can on the PCV side and it has served me well. I used 3/8 inch fuel line for the hoses. I get a LOT of condensation in the winter up here in Chicago, so I end up emptying it every week in the cold months. A good bit of oil is caught in there so I suppose that's good. I was going to tap the bottom of the can and install a valve for easy draining, but never got a round to it.
Friendly reminder for those in the cooler climates to empty their catch cans more frequently.

My ADD W1 can was almost completely full after 2.5-3 weeks worth of city driving.

You beat me to it Staax, I was going to warn everyone too! I filled up yesterday and treated my self to a delicious 'milk shake', because that's what the catch can seems to contain after about a week, a gross chocolate milk looking cup of goo...

WHat happens if you fall behind on your maintenance? Does it simply get recirculated back into the engine/turbo just like you do't have one in the first place?
It would, but instead of the form of vapors it would be straight liquid. Can't answer for sure, but I'm not ready to test that theory out.

Last year I emptied it every two weeks and the can was only ever half full. This year, I had two and a half to three weeks since I last emptied it. My work commute has been cut in half since last winter. I only live 10 km from work and it's all City driving now.

This is the VERY reason why OCC's are not standard in vehicles today. Most customers would forget to empty them and because there are different variables in how much is collected its hard to give a standard empty schedule for them

eBay.

I use an ADD W1 on the PCV side with some extra SS scrubbing mesh as a baffle.

I did have a cheaper eBay one on the breather side but now I just run a breather filter.

Debating about ditching the filter and just running straight VTA.
So this is what I was afraid of choosing to run a catch can in the winter here:



It was -30ºC overnight (-40 with windchill) and now that my car is outside instead of in the garage, it looks like my catch can had frozen.

I'm running just a filter on the breather side but it is perfectly clean, it doesn't look like im getting much out of the breather side anyway.



Also in the PCV side after about only 400 kms (250 miles) my can was half full. There was oil/fuel sitting on top of the frozen stuff seen here.

I've since removed the SS baffling in hopes that the condensation has less material to freeze to, but I'm debating about removing the can for the winter time which isn't ideal, but I'm afraid of blocking a line and causing a seal or something to blow.

Those in cool climates should check to see if their cans are freezing too.
