Factory oil filter tightness

2785 Views 8 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  Mikeysweettricks
Just did my first oil change on my forte5.
Wow. The oil filter was ridiculously tight. I had to go get a new special import oil filter wrench. The band type was just slipping on it.

Anyone else have a similar experience?

Yup my oil filter from the factory was so tight that when I used a oil wrench on it the filter actually crushed under how much force I put on it to get it off. Usually I tighten hand tight and that's it
Mine was too. They probably didn't lube the oring either so I'm sure that contributed to the tightness

Mine is coming up, but dealer is doing it. Try one of those 3 finger types of things for your oil filter. I have always had good luck with those. Except the volvo, there was no space to use anything except their special tool

Mine was extremely tight, I had to wrap it in a microfiber then put the wrench on it and twist just so it wouldn't slide off

+1 on the universal 3-finger oil wrench. Mine was a little ridiculous, too (but not from the factory).

I haven't had to use a filter wrench in YEARS, but on the first oil change I did I had to. REALLY on there tight, I guess they didn't want it coming off on the boat ride over from Korea...

that's the way all factory filters most of the time are, the 3 finger claw is what I use everyday

My 1st oil change went so smoothly until I had to take the OEM filter off. Holly crap that thing was on so tight. I barely could get it off with my filter wrench.
