I had a ignition coil go bad on cylinder 4. Pretty shitty considering I only have 51K.

I checked the plugs during trouble shooting and the gaps were way out of spec ranging from .045 to .055. I'll post pic later tonight. I suggest check the gaps on your plugs on your next OC.

The plugs were the Autolight xr5703 that I switched out when I first got the car 09/2015 so less than 50K on the plugs.

Aren't plugs scheduled at 45k miles to be replaced on T-GDI?

I might be old school, but I do not trust spark plugs that have more than 30k miles... especially in this engine.

I wasn't aware of the change intervals for the plugs. I pulled the OEM plugs and replaced with the Autolites the first couple of months I got the car. I'll check every other OC as these Autolites are pretty cheap with discounts at Advance Auto.

Put a set of NGK 1422's in about 500 miles ago. Set the gap on them to .028 as they were about .024 out of the box. I wanted to get some miles on these plugs before talking about them here. So far the biggest difference I notice is much less what I call "Fish Bite" when accelerating through gears.

What plug # did you take out? I haven't checked my plugs yet.
What do you mean by "fish bite"?

OE plugs were SILZKR7E8EG. Fish bite I'll describe as a hesitation or feels like a misfire when accelerating.

I experienced the misfire like and hesitation.
However, what I later noticed that if I drove the car hard for a while - a few WOT pulls, higher rpm at WOT, spark plugs would "clear" and all would seem good for a while. All ranges of throttle would be good and smooth. Until another time... so I would "clean" them again and be fine for next few hundred miles.

So theses plugs (1422) are one step colder then the stock plugs right? So does the car run better, start, MPG, or cooler running?
Maybe I should change my plugs out?

Yes. these plugs are heat range 8. I believe these are the current plugs that come in the 1.6T motors now. These are a definite improvement over the heat range 7 oe plugs. I don't track MPG's as I'm a pretty spirited driver and use the throttle as I see fit. I have very minor mods, hot pipe, cold pipe, k&n drop in, 2nd cat delete and map sensor. The motor is also fully vented to atmosphere. That's about all I'm gonna do at this time as these mods have made some more power and made the motor pull strongly and cleanly. Without these mods I felt a lot of hesitation when accelerating.

Colder, means the spark plug will "release" heat faster, hence running colder.
MPG will not be affected, or actually may get worse... as the most heat we are talking about happens under large loads, especially low end (full torque).

Keeping spark plugs colder prevents from predetonation when the spark plug is glowing hot and fresh mixture gets in. Then it reacts like diesel engine and simply gets ignited before ECU wants it to causing power loss and shaking/pinging.

On the other hand - colder spark plug tends to accumulate residue (most of the time black deposits of unburned fuel). As a result it will start fouling if not cleaned. Self cleaning takes place when the spark plug gets hot enough to burn it off.

And that is what I believe happens sometimes. Spark plugs do not get hot enough to clean off the residue.
Initially KIA/Hyundai put the warmer plugs what was fine for lower loads, but under heavy, low end throttle, they started pinging... so they went colder, but then if not pushed from time to time, they will be fouled...

Well I put the 1422 plugs in today. Didn't drive it much, but it felt smoother to me. I'll be driving more tomorrow and this weekend will report back then.
Oil change this week for sure.

Yes. I set them at .028. They were less then .024 out-of-the-box.
The OEM plugs (5 years old 30K) looked OK, but they looked "tired".

I’m glad I came across this thread. I’m at about 43,500 miles and was going to go with the spec. from Alldata. Had them in my Amazon cart. Excuse my ignorance, but can I ask...any concerns with the factory warranty, using the 1422s?

Probably no real concern. Although if you go to the dealership and they aren't specifically what they have listed they might bring it up. But, same manufacturer as OEM and only 1 heat ranger cooler. So I wouldn't be concerned.

Personally, I'm staying with the oem heat range 7 plugs. They work well for me and they're 1 step cooler than the heat range 6 plugs that originally came in earlier version of our mtors but to each his own.

Also, just noticed you're from STL! Same here.

ah, ok...so, it's the SILZKR6D8E, that Alldata shows. They are a heat range 6. I would guess that's what's in my car now. What's the number for the heat range 7? I've worked for a dealership and I currently work for an extended warranty company, so I have seen how nitpicky it can get on engine claims.
Thanks for the welcome. I don't see many Fortes where I am...and even less Forte5's...just a ton of Optimas, lol. I'm in St. Charles, though, and I pretty much stay in this area.

interesting....those are heat range 7. We basically have the same car. I wonder if there was a cutoff where the plug was different, OR...they changed the recommended plug, since our cars were built. I go to lunch in like 2 minutes. Gonna check my build date.
