I've put dash cams in our last several vehicles and plan to do so in the Forte as well. What's a good spot to tap for power? I don't have a moonroof but in others cars that what I would tap into. Is there a good switched power source nearby? An install for an auto-dimming mirror would be a good lead.

Are you mounting the dash cam on the dash or up top? If it is the dash there are too many to choose from and from up top unless you have the Auto dimming rear view or the sunroof you don't have much up there. Mine has 12v constant, ground and a dimming source most likely part of the canbus module (not ideal for electronics). There may be more I just haven't pull the headliner to look for the hidden harnesses yet. Might also get lucky and already have the harness there for the mirror since that is a dealer option also but mine does not have the plug for it or should I say couldn't find the plug for it.

Yeah planning on installing up by the mirror. I may just pick up a home link dimming mirror and throw that up there too once I can find a good way to do it. Wonder if it's possible to get a copy of the dealer install instructions on the mirror.

Take out the dome lights. It's like 3 screws and check if the harness is there for the mirror. I saw them when dealing to leds. But did not check for the harness. if you want to change yours they are all the smaller festoon bulbs (all 3 dome lights, rear, and the vanity ones.) Can't remeber what the glove box is though.

On a side note, if you do see the harness, let me know which is switched power. I want to change my homelike to only operate when the alarm is not armed.

Now back on topic

i ran a wire from behind the 12v socket in the center console, i ran it up and over the glove box, I mounted my 5v converter behind the side dash access panel, then ran the 5v connector up the a-pillar and then removed the dome light and the passenger side visor and that gave me enough wiggle room to run the wire and mount my dash cam to the rear view mirror.

to mount my dash cam, i used a bicycle handle bar mount. the homelink mirror shaft is big enough that it securely mounts perfectly and the camera hangs just below the mirror, which is what i wanted so i can verify the red light on the back to know that its recording.

i installed the same camera in my friend's soul, he didnt have homelink which means the mirror shaft was smaller, so we just a piece of vaccumm rubber belt to take up the slack, it worked pretty well.

I used one of those fuse block taps to get power, and then ran the wire up the driver side A Piller and under the front of the headliner next to the windshield. I mounted my camera in front of the mirror so it is not very visible. To further conceal it, I mounted the radar detector to the side of the camera. This also makes it look like the wire is running to the detector.
